Pere Ubu - Cloudland

Abrasive Post-Punk experimenters get a budget and Stephen Hague and make unexpectedly glorious pop album in 1989.

I originally had this on a cassette I got from a shop on Baker Street in 1990 as I was working for Westminster for a week as a student. John Major had not long got in and Dame Shirley Porter was about to be exposed for Gerrymandering votes in Westminster. The funeral march was hummed by staff in the corridors. No mobile phones. No internet. 4 channels on TV.

I was to-ing and fro-ing between Kent, Sussex and London (aged 19) and trying to make sense of my life and where I wanted to be (London).

Sofa surfing on a squalid couch in Hither Green and wearing a cheap suit into the gloomy dark timber panelled offices of Westminster with this on my Walkman headphones.
